Real to Reel: Racialized Representations and French "Banlieue" Cinema

Current book project
Book cover

Real to Reel explores “le cinéma de banlieue,” a genre of French narrative cinema by post-2005 Afro-descended artists, examining how filmmakers and actors respond to racialized exclusion and typecasting in French society. The book traces how lived experience is translated into new cinematic forms that contest dominant representations and expand the possibilities of b/Black presence in French film.
